Later, when the tea and coffee was fetched in, along with dainty sandwiches and pastries the guests headed immediately to the sideboard as if they hadn’t eaten only a few hours ago. This was the first opportunity she’d had to speak to Miss Smithson about the mouse incident.

‘I must thank you for your timely intervention. It avoided an embarrassing situation from becoming worse.’

‘I’ve never had such fun in my life as I have since I came here. I find Lord James an amusing conversationalist and my dearest sister has begun to relax and enjoy herself too. I can’t tell you how glad we are, my lady, that we were included in this delightful house party.’

‘Please, might I have permission to use your given name and you must also call me Rose.’

‘If you’re quite sure the earl won’t object to such familiarity, then I’d be delighted. The blizzard has passed but it remains freezing. Do you have a sleigh or two hidden away in this vast place?’

Sarah joined them. ‘I’ve never ridden in a horse-drawn sleigh, but would love to do so if that’s possible.’

‘I had planned to offer rides in one if it snowed on the day that others might be skating and tobogganing.’

Her father came towards them looking years younger, and for the first time she realised he wasn’t old but would possibly be considered a good match by many of the young ladies present.

‘Rose, I just wished to add my congratulations on arranging this splendid party. It’s exactly what this dismal place needed. I could almost enjoy living here if it was always full of such jollity and good company.’ He turned to Sarah. ‘My dear Miss Sarah, could you spare me a few minutes as I wish to have your advice on what song to sing tomorrow.’

He held out his arm and Sarah slipped her own through it and walked off happily. Jane saw her watching. ‘Are you shocked that your father is taking an interest in my sister?’

‘No, not at all. She is a lovely young woman but half his age. I’m more surprised that she appears to return his interest.’
